Optical fibers are utilized both on Earth and in space for various purposes, including medicine, defense, cybersecurity, and telecommunications. Research conducted in parabolic flights indicates that optical fibers manufactured in microgravity can be of superior quality compared to those produced under normal gravity conditions. The International Space Station offers a viable platform for the commercial production of these fibers. The Production of Flawless Space Fiber (Flawless Space Fibers-1) investigation is leveraging the space station to showcase new manufacturing technology created by Flawless Photonics, aimed at enhancing the quality and length of optical fibers made in space.
